You Might Not Be As Funny As You Think You Are
Fuck, I am really worked up about this now. Yesterday this thing spread across Tumblr. It was a screed attributed to Bill Nye The Science Guy that uses abelist and misogynist language. It was heralded as the ultimate Bill Nye moment even though it used the kind of language Nye would never use. It was obviously fake, but the Internet is full of gullible people who want to believe that their idols agree with everything they think.
I’m not going to link to it because it’s a piece of shit and the people who made it are pieces of shit and everyone who believed it is .. well, if you believed it you should take a shower because you smell like shit. You may not actually be shit, but you smell like it.
It came from a “satire” site that doesn’t present satire as much as hackneyed crap that any eight year old could come up with. It’s a site like The Onion except bereft of skill, insight, or genuine humor.
And so I blame The Onion, as well as comedians such as Louis C.K. and George Carlin and Richard Pryor and many others. The reason that I blame that site and those guys is because they make edgy humor look so fucking easy that any angry jerkoff thinks that they can be the next big thing without even trying.
I wish that all comedians were like Conan O’Brien. He makes humor look easy, but also sometimes takes us behind the scenes to see the team of people behind his humor. He let’s us know that it is not easy, not accidental, and not something that any loser can just do without training and experience.
I don’t claim to be the funniest guy ever, or the best writer, or the most knowledgeable about how entertainment works. But when I do attempt to be funny it’s not just some crass appeal to the lowest common denominator. And at least I try to be objective about my level of ability. I would never dare to attach my personality defects to someone with the intellect and grace of Bill Nye The Science Guy, unless I was trying to denigrate one of my idols. And why the fuck would I do that?
Appreciating humor and creating humor are two very different things. Just because you can do one, that doesn’t mean you can do both. Do you think you’re funny? What reason do you have to think that? Because you might not be a funny person. You might just be some jackass dragging the world down to your level.
